Why do I do this? Oh yeah, it's my job.
I ran off sixty copies for a presentation on interlibrary loan for the law journal spaders.
Five students showed up.
I don't know where the rest of them are, but there appears to be a school-sponsored kegger going on outside...

No, that wouldn't solve the problem of giving the law students a clue. But at least there'd be ready relief for your frustration, if there's a kegger underway just outside the law library when you get off work. ;-)

I made 65 copies of an 18 page report for one of the physicians, only to be told later that he wanted them scanned, not copied.

Frustration sympathy.
Not showing up for class is more than insulting - its shows a total lack of respect. In Japan its unheared of. If these guys are ever going to be more than a drain on society they need to have high work ethics and integrity.
If they dont turn up to class fail them or subtract class credit.
Give one-off death or glory extra-credit assignments to those that do.
Simple fact: those who put in the work should reap the rewards - not those that waste your time should be coddled.
Once word gets around that you are a 'hardcase' or 'tough + not fair!' lecturer things should go just fine. Especially if you temper this with a certain amount of tolerance (every lecturer knows those students who are working as opposed to coasting. )
Its nice to be nice, its just as important to be respected. (thats my advice for what its worth. :)
