James Dobson and Co. throw fit at evangelicals who are talking about global warming; evangelicals don't budge and decide to oppose torture too

"We have observed that Cizik and others are using the global warming controversy to shift the emphasis away from the great moral issues of our time, notably the sanctity of human life, the integrity of marriage and the teaching of sexual abstinence and morality to our children," said the letter, which was signed by prominent religious conservatives such as James Dobson, Don Wildmon, Paul Weyrich and Gary Bauer.

Yeah, because Jesus spent so much time talking about hating on gays and people who have sex -- wait a second! Somebody's replaced my Gospels with Folger's crystals! This says Jesus' greatest ire was reserved for the Pharisees, those who espoused the letter of the law while oppressing the poor and anyone else they didn't like. Why do these people sound vaguely familiar?

"We're not going to allow third parties to divide evangelicals, and I think that is what is happening in part with the global warming issue," Perkins said.

Who are these third parties? ....Oh right, they must be third parties, because Real Christians aren't supposed to be thinking for themselves. Just shut up and do what Daddy Dobson tells you to. And you women, get in the kitchen and make him some pie.

However, the association board not only stood behind Cizik, but also further broadened the group's agenda with a statement condemning torture, which charged that in pursuing the war on terror, the United States had crossed "boundaries of what is legally and morally permissible."

Oh horrors!! What would Jesus say to all this opposing torture nonsense? Maybe... "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you"?

But one of the board members, the Rev. Paul de Vries, said, "It ought to be God's agenda, not the Republican Party's agenda, that drives us.

"We're actually tired of being represented by people with a very narrow focus," he said. "We want to have a focus as big as God's focus."

And to that, I say amen.

Finally someone is getting it together to let everyone know that the Religious Right does not speak for all the Christians in America. Check it out:

Sign the Jacksonville Declaration of the Christian Alliance.

I especially love their attempt to extrapolate what Jesus would say, according to the Religious Right:

"You are strong and powerful; your ideals are noble. Make war to spread those ideals."
"The end is near - So it doesn't matter what you do to my Father's creation."
"Heal the sick - Provided they can pay."
"All are welcome at the table - As long as they are the same as we are."
"Follow me - And help me form a government to force others to follow."

Good stuff. I really hope these folks can get off the ground. At any rate, I'm just happy to see them speaking up.
